Fire District 3 Goal Setting Workshop:
Fire District 3 Goal Setting Workshop segment from Clallam County Watchdog podcast, February 8, 2026:
Audio Clip Highlights:
Goal setting workshop held at the beginning of every year.
Fire District 3 covers from Deer Park Road to the county line, including a small section into Jefferson County.
Fire Commissioner Jeff Nicholas said that this year they’ve got to provide metrics to the community and have measurable outcomes. There’s going to be milestones. They’re going to set goals and have dates for when those goals are going to be accomplished.
A lot of calls the fire district answers in Sequim are for helping people get up or out of bed or transferring. Due to liability concerns, an entire team is sent to answer the calls. If there’s a stroke, a heart attack, more help may be needed so it’s better to send a team.
If there are problems, the commissioners are going to identify them and correct them.
Purpose of the open forum workshop is to shape the direction that the fire district’s going in the year with open dialogue from the firefighters to the commissioners to the chief.
Workshop included minutes, a slide presentation and visuals on the whiteboard.
Looking to relocate Fire District 3, currently on the east side of Carlsborg Road, to the training center grounds on the west side of Carlsborg Road with groundbreaking in 2027 and completion by 2028.
Fire District 3 recognizes that “we are caretakers of the public’s money.”
With the goal of building a new fire station, they have extreme hesitancy about reaching out to the voters and asking for that money. They acknowledge that taxes are outrageous, property taxes for residents living here are outrageous, and they don’t want to burden taxpayers with yet another tax increase.
They have a $19 million budget and they should have run a bond five years ago as a district because inflation is out of control. Five years ago, a fire truck would have been $750,000 high price. Now they have to pay a million and a half dollars for one.
It’s not just inflation they’re working against. In Washington State, when you build a public building, when you use public funds, you have to meet these standards; some of them are green energy standards, and some are ADA standards. For example, one of the rooms in the new fire house has to be ADA accessible because it’s a public building.
The workshop was filled with servants’ hearts. It hurts to pay that much money when they pass that bond, but you can rest a little bit easier knowing that they are thinking about the money, using it wisely, being efficient, being economical. And they have not forgotten who pays their bills, who’s paying for the building, who pays for their benefits and their paychecks. They have not forgotten. The public was mentioned several times over and over.
Jeff Tozzer was the only member of the public and it’s a public meeting; anyone could have been there. They are hungry for public participation. They are thirsty to hear from the public. They would bend over backwards just to have someone walk through their door and say, I’m going to start attending fire commissioner meetings and I want to learn more about how my government serves me.
Check out their website. Their meetings are public; they have low, low public attendance. They’re looking for community engagement, and you won’t find a nicer group of people. They’ll take a timeout and answer all your questions.
